Brooches have been seen on fronts of some of the most fashionable women in town recently (Olivia Palermo and Fabiola Bercasa - to name a few) and there are a thousand ways to wear them. I suggest that the bigger the brooch the better and don't always assume it needs to be placed on a lapel!
